Zinc is a mineral that is essential to the human body. It is vital for health body functions such as growth and cell division; fertility; healthy skin, hair, and nails; vital for taste, smell, and appetite; vital for vision; and for a healthy immune system.
Individuals primarily get the required amount of zinc from eating a healthy diet which included foods rich in zinc. Zinc rich food include: shellfish, oysters, fish, brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, wheat bran, pine nuts, pecan nuts, cashew nuts, eggs, liver, eggs, parmesan cheese, various seeds (sesame, poppy, celery, mustard, and alfalfa), beans, nuts, almonds, blackcurrant, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds.
Individuals that do not get enough zinc from food either do to a lack in diet or medical condition, require additional zinc from a dietary supplement. Zinc deficiency can cause skin problems, hair loss, delayed healing of wounds, night blindness, hypersensitivity to light (photophobia), susceptibility to infection (increased instances of colds, flu, and sore throats), impaired taste, lack of appetite, insomnia, white spots or bands on fingernails, and liver or spleen enlargement. Children with a zinc deficiency can experience growth retardation. Men with a zinc deficiency can experience low sperm count or impotence.
